September Convocation

A Gathering of Fellowship, Worship, and Shared Mission

The Episcopal Deanery Convocation is a vibrant and sacred gathering of clergy, lay leaders, and parishioners from across the deanery—a regional group of Episcopal churches within a diocese. Held periodically throughout the year, this convocation serves as a time of communal worship, collaborative ministry, and mutual encouragement.

Rooted in Episcopal tradition and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit, the convocation typically begins with a joyful Eucharist or Morning Prayer, followed by workshops, discussion forums, and reports that reflect the shared mission and ministry across congregations. Participants engage in meaningful conversations about local outreach, social justice, Christian formation, and the life of the wider Church.

This is also a time for lay and ordained leaders to build relationships, celebrate successes, share resources, and discern how the Spirit is calling the deanery forward. Whether hosted in a historic sanctuary, a parish hall, or a retreat center, the convocation is a tangible sign of unity in diversity—Episcopalians coming together to grow in faith and service.

📅 Key Dates & Deadlines

Purpose & Participation

The Diocesan Convention is the annual legislative and spiritual assembly of our Diocese. Delegates—both clergy and lay—from every congregation unite to:

  • Worship together and renew our common life in Eucharist and prayer

  • Elect diocesan leaders (Standing Committee, Executive Council, Secretary, Treasurer, deputies to General Convention) cfdiocese.org+14diocalconvention.org+14diocalconvention.org+14norcalepiscopal.org

  • Hear reports from diocesan officers, commissions, and task forces including finance, mission outreach, and social justice initiatives

  • Deliberate and vote on resolutions submitted by congregations, clergy, and diocesan bodies—particularly those addressing anti-racism, disability inclusion, environmental justice, and more diocalconvention.org

  • Approve the diocesan budget and clergy cost-of-living adjustments

  • Engage in visioning and planning for the future of the Diocese

What to Expect

  • Worship: Opening Eucharist or Morning Prayer brings the community together in prayer and song.

  • Legislative Engagement: Delegate orientation, resolution discussion, elections, and vote tallies.

  • Reports & Presentations: Highlights of diocesan ministries and financial health.

  • Fellowship: Time for reflection, connecting across congregations, and exploring exhibits or diocesan ministries in convention hall.

Why It Matters

The Convention is both a democratic institution and a spiritual gathering—governed by Canon and Spirit. Crucial decisions are made here that shape:

  • Leadership: Electing those who will guide diocesan mission, governance, and resources

  • Policy & Justice: Enacting resolutions on equity, reconciliation, disability ministry, and more

  • Financial Vitality: Approving budgets, setting clergy compensation standards, funding ministries

  • Community Vision: Strengthening bonds across deaneries and uplifting collective vision rooted in the Gospel

How to Get Involved

  1. Resolve to be there as clergy, delegate, or guest—check your Certificate of Lay Delegate form (due mid-September).

  2. Submit Resolutions or Nominations by end of July.

  3. Prepare by completing anti-racism and Safe Church training (required for delegates) diocalconvention.orgnorcalepiscopal.orgdiocalconvention.org.

  4. Join delegate info sessions (usually in September) and plan your travel and accommodations in San Francisco.

In Summary

The 2025 Diocesan Convention is a sacred and formal opportunity to shape the life and mission of the Episcopal Diocese of California. Through worship, governance, shared listening, and legislative action, we recommit ourselves to being disciples, raising up saints, and transforming communities in Christ’s name.
